I am so excited to share this novel with you. The concept of this story has been bouncing around in my head for the past decade but I never had the time to write it until I left law enforcement. It has taken a lot of twists and turns but I am thrilled with the result. I am already working on the next book in the trilogy and will keep you all posted on major developments at my new website.

I’ve also just received my copy in the mail today and have made it 23 pages in so far. And I have to say this: so far, it’s really good, page turning in fact. I am not one to bestow praise on authors lightly, either. With every new author I start with a level of distrust; they have to slowly win me over before I like them.

Of course, having read the f4f blog in its entirety Tom’s writing is not new to me, only his polished fiction is. So far I like it a lot. It’s like a very extended edition of one of those “Armchair Detective” exercises… I can see the clues being laid down, I can tell that the author is enjoying overloading my brain with copious details in a (probably successful) attempt to make me guess wrong, but I can’t help but read on, hoping to figure as much out as possible before he clues me in.

I can already tell that Tom’s a student of the game of writing as much as he’s a student of forensics and probably everything else that piques his interest. It’s that sort of detail that makes for good, realistic fiction. It’s like reading a Clancy novel, you know that the author is either writing from years of experience or in the case where he has to research, he’s done it and at least isn’t talking out of his ass. One of the fastest turn offs for a reader is when things don’t ring true. I can tell that this is chock full of authentic LEO and CSI frustrations given vent through the characters, and it’s great!

I also like how Tom has chosen wisely to stick with the Colorado location that he knows. It reminds me of how Steven King would always write about towns in Maine… because he lives there. Good choice.

In summary: so far, so good. I’m impressed. And the line about the air fresheners is a classic.
